About Trunkfield Software
Named after a brook, not a buzzword.
A software house in Lichfield that builds its own products and builds software for other organisations.
The name
Trunkfield Brook is a small stream in Lichfield. Historically it was known as Sandford Brook, a name that points to a crossing place: a ford.
We took the name because it describes the job. Organisations come to us standing on one bank, with work that is harder than it should be, and a fairly clear idea of the other bank. Our part is the crossing.
The three stones in our drawing are deliberate. There are always three. They stand for the products and systems that get people across, placed where the water is shallow enough to step.
Why the willow
Willows grow beside water and stay for a long time. They give shelter and ask for very little. That is roughly what we want from the software we build: useful, dependable, and still standing long after the launch.
What to expect.
- We say what the software does, in plain words.
- We would rather remove a step than add a feature.
- We tell you when something is a bad idea, including ours.
- We use AI where it does a specific, useful job, and we tell you exactly which job.
- We run what we build, so we live with our own decisions.
Ordinary, well-tested technology, used carefully.
Proven tools
We choose mature, well-supported technology over the newest thing, so what we build is easy to maintain for years.
Tested and reviewed
Every change is reviewed and covered by automated tests before it goes live.
Secure by default
Access is limited to the people who need it, data is encrypted, and backups are tested. More on security.
Accessible
We build to WCAG 2.2 AA, so software works for people using keyboards, screen readers and phones.
Documented
Every system comes with documentation a new developer could pick up and understand.
AI where it helps
We use AI for specific jobs whose results can be checked, and we say exactly what it does.
Lichfield, and wherever you are.
We are based in Lichfield, a small cathedral city in Staffordshire, close to Birmingham and the rest of the Midlands.
We work with organisations across the UK, mostly remotely, and we are happy to meet in person when it helps.
Not hiring right now. Still listening.
We are a small team and are not recruiting at the moment. If you are a developer or designer who likes the way we work, write to us anyway at hello@trunkfield.co.uk. We read every message.
